Lords of Earth and Lords of Fire

The Princes of Amber

Benedict

Son of Oberon and Cymnea

Then there was Benedict, tall and dour, thin; thin of body, thin of face, wide of mind. He wore orange and yellow and brown and reminded me of haysticks and pumpkins and scarecrows and the Legend of Sleepy Hollow. He had a long strong jaw and hazel eyes and brown hair that never curled. He stood beside a tan horse and leaned upon a lance about which was twined a rope of flowers. He seldom laughed.

Benedict is the sole surviving offspring of the annulled marriage between Oberon and Cymnea, and thus the oldest of the Princes still living. He withdraws himself of his own will and choice from the family's bickerings, preferring to reside in Shadow and in peace. He returns to Amber as seldom as possible, and only at her need. Nonetheless, his return is feared indeed by Amber's opponents; the Patternfall War's outcome suggests strongly that Benedict is not merely the greatest warrior and general of Amber, but the greatest of all existence.

It is claimed by some that a liaison between Benedict and a hellmaiden named Lintra produced a line of offspring in Chaos, and that through this line Dara, the current Duchess Sawall, is Benedict's great-granddaughter.

Benedict's current whereabouts are unknown to most, but this is not uncommon. He was last seen in Amber approximately four years ago.

In the mythology surrounding the royals' Trumps and the Tarot in Amber, Benedict is frequently depicted as Judgment: implacable at the head of an army, and wielding a sword of flame.
