Lords of Earth and Lords of Fire

The Princes of Amber

Julian

Son of Oberon and Isabella

Next, there was the passive countenance of Julian, dark hair hanging long, blue eyes containing neither passion nor compassion. He was dressed completely in scaled white armor, not silver or metallic-colored, but looking as if it had been enameled.

After the death of Queen Harla, Oberon took up association with one of his old flames: Isabella, already mother of his son Caine. This time, they married. Julian was the first child resultant. Vanity and chill are his hallmarks, hand in hand with a legendary self-control. He is what he has always been: the Master of Arden, the Forest Lord, surrounded by rangers as loyal to him as are his hunting hounds, rider of a steed forged out of shadows, and not a man to be trifled with. Though he makes no secret of his own ambition toward the Throne, he has served each of Amber's rulers in turn - Oberon, Eric, even Corwin for his brief regency. And when Random was chosen by the Unicorn, Julian's was the first sword laid before him.

In the mythology surrounding the royals' Trumps and the Tarot in Amber, Julian is frequently depicted in the Wild Hunt (a card without an equivalent in Earthly tarot, representing concepts associated here not only with Celtic mythology but with Dionysus and the Maenads as well): an implacable figure of ice mounted upon a pale steed, antlers of bone crowning him, surrounded by a pack of hunting hounds with eyes painted of literal fire.
